Product Reviews

Take your wake-up music out of the hands of DJs and create your own morning soundtrack with this jWin CD clock radio. Compatible with CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, the JL-CD811 plays both prerecorded and custom-burned albums, so you can build song compilations on your computer and listen to them through the radio's side speakers. As an alternative, you can turn to the digital AM/FM tuner to enjoy such standbys as NPR, talk radio news, and drive-time morning hosts, or simply set the alarm to sound an old-school buzzer each morning. And thanks to such CD playback options as repeat (one and all tracks) and random play, the device excels in non-alarm locations as well, such as in kitchens or garages. All this in a stylish, modern housing that takes up a minimum of space (the device measures 8.66 by 3.31 by 7.86 inches).

Additional features include a dual alarm function, which sounds two different alarms each morning so users can wake up on their own schedules; an easy-to-read oversized LCD screen; an adjustable sleep timer (59 minutes maximum); and a snooze alarm. The device runs on AC power but includes a 9-volt battery backup that preserves the settings should the power fail.

What's in the Box
JL-CD811 clock radio, user's manual.

bright, poor audio quality, did i say BRIGHT
even though this radio is cheap, I still expected something, anything, and what I got is an extra bright night light that keeps my gf up, and as a consequence i'm looking for another decent alarm. Did i mention it runs slow for me? It slows about 1 min per day, which is not a good feature in an alarm clock

Useless
Don't buy this alarm clock! This CD alarm clock was a huge disappointment for me.

Things I like about this clock:

1. Big snooze button
2. Styling is decent

Things I hate about this clock:

1. Illegible in the dark -- the portions of the display AROUND the numbers are so bright that there isn't enough contrast between the "background" and the numbers. As a result, the numbers are illegible at night.

2. Blindingly bright in the dark -- Even on the "dim" setting, the display will blind you if you try to view it in the dark.

3. The labels for the various alarm settings (on, off, auto, buzzer) are misaligned with the slider switch that controls them. When you adjust the switch to the "on" position, the alarm is actually off. When you adjust the switch to the "off" position, the alarm is actually on "auto", etc. A nightmare.

4. The alarm functions are ridiculously complicated to set. Want to wake up to the sound of your favorite CD? Be sure to keep handy the owner's manual to remind you of the seven-step procedure you need to follow to set the alarm to play a CD.

Not worth the money. Not worth any money, in fact. It's on its way to the Salvation Army.

Display could be better
The clock display does not match the photo above. The dark (background) area is actually lit up (a darker blue than the clock numerals) and it lights up the entire room at night. Audio quality is loud and clear, pretty good for the price.

P-E-R-F-E-C-T !!
We bought the BLUE version of this for my son on his 5th birthday and cannot tell you how much he loves it. My son wanted a Disney Cars version, which was more expensive and a piece of junk... this goes well with the artwork from that movie- and is a much better investment for our money. He LOVED it. He has had it for about 6 months and it has been his most prized possession ever since.
The alarm feature is nice and the fact that this will easily grow with him into adulthood.
The sound quality is excellent, it is simple to use and very well designed. Any product that can stand up to frequent unsupervised use by my child gets a big thumbs up for quality and durability.
The most striking feature of this radio though, is its design. It gets a lot of attention from visitors. It is a really cool item for anyone's bedside.
Great gift idea- any little boy would be fascinated by this- and encouraged to discover music. Great idea for an adult as well. I'd personally love the pink one.

Not recommended
Item emitted a burning smell within minutes of plugging the item in. CD player stopped working too...

Darling CD player
Gift for my youngest granddaughter. This is a funky, cute player and she listens to it as she goes to sleep at night.

Beware of the back light!
This product has a 2-way switch on the back for the "back light" control. It's suppose to be Bright/Dim, but it should be labeled Bright/Brighter.

If you need anything approaching a dark bedroom, avoid this product.

If you can sleep in any light, go for it -- everything else did work as advertised.

PS - This appears to be the same unit as the "SS-6000".

Great CD alarm clock but WAY too bright
This is my second attempt in buying a CD alarm clock and I do not understand why the manufacturers make the LCD so bright! Even on its dimmest setting, this clock illuminates my room and makes it difficult to sleep. Additionally, the projection feature is too bright even when I've covered the LCD. I'm trying to find a creative solution because it's too much of a hassle to return.

I gave this alarm clock 3 stars because the sound quality is good and I like the nature sound options. I would be entirely happy with it if it weren't for the brightness. It's a great option for a child's room or anywhere light isn't a problem.

Cool product
I love all but one thing about this Sound Spa...the display is way too bright even on the "dim" setting. I sleep with a washcloth over it! Not very handy for checking on the time when you wake up in the middle of the night!
The sounds are great & you can listen to them all night or set a timer to shut them up.

Caller ID announce doesn't work as advertised
I thought if I entered in the name of unidentified callers (not blocked, but cell phone calls that only show the number and not the name) that it would display or announce them correctly when the person subsequently called. Not. It still says unavailable (again, it's NOT blocked), and just announces "you have a call." (Duh, I know that--the phone is ringing.) When I try to enter the name into the phone book from the caller ID log after the person calls, it takes the entry, but it doesn't "stick" and the next time the person calls, it's the same thing--unavailable, you have a call. Since that's the only reason I bought this phone, I'm very disappointed. I wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for Timex's good name. Shame on them.

We are pleased.
I bought this radio as a Christmas present for an office mate. I wanted something small and not too expensive since in an office building things can disapear. The reception in the building is ususaly not so good and that was a concern. Three months later I am happy to report that this one works fine. We have had no problems with the radio or the CD player.

Very Disappointed
My wife purchased this alarm clock for me for Christmas 2007. It is the second piece of Coby electronic equipment that I've owned. My experience is that Coby builds extremely CHEAP (meaning, poor quality) products. My complaints with this product are:

1) The product does not keep accurate time (gains about 7-8 minutes per month - most likely an electronics design flaw that recurs in each of these alarm clocks).
2) The product "hums" through the speakers (a short in the internal electronics due to poor circuit board design - also a design flaw that probably recurs in each of these alarm clocks). Interestingly, when the product is powered ON, like when the user wants to listen to a CD but hasn't yet hit the play button, the humming quits. BUT, if the unit is left ON accidentally, the alarm does NOT work. I know. I powered the unit ON to get the annoying humming to stop and was late to work the next day because the alarm never sounded.
3) CD door is overly difficult to open and close (a coefficient of friction design flaw that is also recurring, probably).
4) The LED display is overly bright and no dimmer switch is featured (yet another design flaw).
5) All plastic parts are extremely cheap. White plastic cabinet parts are not the same color of white (do not match). Silver paint on buttons will obviously soon wear off, etc.

While this alarm clock had all of the features that I was looking for in an alarm clock (except for the dimmer switch), the aforementioned list of design flaws forced me to return the product as defective. Bottom line: VERY CHEAPLY BUILT!

A GREAT CD player/alarm clock!
I bought this for my husband for our anniversary. He had an old alarm clock that was hard to set. This one is great. Simple to use, to set, to play, everything is marked very clearly. I get up half an hour earlier than he does, so it is fantastic to have a dual alarm. We wake up to a CD. It also sounds great! We can listen to our CD's without having an extra CD player taking up room. I have had no problems with it at all!!

Laughably bad
This is such a bad product. I seriously want my money back, but it's not even worth the hassle. Luckily, I decided to use it as my CD player in my bedroom, and not as an alarm clock. I keep this thing all the way across the bedroom from my bed, and I STILL have to drape heavy clothing over it every night in order to be able to sleep, and I am NOT a sensitive sleeper. The display is so freakishly bright, it actually illuminates my entire (rather large) bedroom with it's horrible blue glow. There's some garbage about an "automatic dimmer" in the description of this product, but that is pure bull. It's supposed to dim when the lights go out, but if anything, it actually gets brighter. I cannot imagine how anyone can sleep with this next to their beds. Furthermore, what's the point of the horrifically bright time display if you can't ever read the time unless you're facing it directly face-on, and about an inch from the display? Whoever designed this is an idiot, as the bright blue background almost completely obscures the black numbers that show the time. The colors are too close in tone or brightness for there to be enough contrast to read what the display says.

Another problem, and this one is even "funnier" than the aforementioned: as we speak, my month-old Emerson clock-radio is speeding through the time, literally. It has some weird tick, where, if you use the remote control to control the volume, it affects the minutes part of the time as well as the volume. If you hold down the up or down volume buttons for any amount of time, the minutes start freaking out uncontrollably. For instance, as I write, my clock is going through 11 am over and over and over again at warp speed. It would be funny if I didn't pay for this piece of garbage.

All of that being said, the CD player in my experience is serviceable. Mine plays burned CDs as well as normal ones. The sound quality is decent for such a small player.

If you are thinking of getting this as a clock or alarm, please think carefully: the screwed up volume-time function, the horribly bright display, and the almost complete lack of contrast between the time digits and background make this virtually unuseable as an alarm clock.

There isn't 4.5 stars
Well, I just bought this today, and I loved it ever since I've had it. Blue lighting, auto dimmer, so many options. This was the cheapest I found with the standards I had (digital tuning, CD player, etc.) The remote is very useful, but too bad they don't save the radio stations (have to tune every time). But they do save the order of how you want your tracks to be played on your CD. The motorized door is such a special thing. The themal snooze is also sweet, so you don't have to find the snooze button to keep on sleeping. I did find it hard to use set the minutes and hours for the alarm and clock (hit one accidentally). But, the light on the side of the glass makes up for all of that (it looks so cool...) Pros: Digital FM/AM radio Motorized door to play CD Auto Dimmer CD-RW player Thermal snooze 2 3 inch speakers 2 antennas (for AM and FM) Memory for track order Cons: Confusing for setting time and alarm Small wire is antenna for FM radio No saved radio stations Knob used for tuning Have to hit the alarm off button after snooze (probably standard for all alarm clocks) If they had saved radio stations, I would've given this a 5. Its kind of a hassle using the knob to get to the exact station.

BRIGHT LIGHT!
The only thing I have to complain about my new alarm clock is the display. It is WAY too bright, more of a night-light than an alarm clock display. Also, the numbers are hard to see from an angle. But I bought the product for it's touchless snooze, which I've looked for to replace my circa 1985 SounDesign alarm clock with. It took me several years, and many alarm clock purchases to find one I'm happy with. The controls are easy to figure out, and it has great sound, so I'm satisfied. I think I'll find some window-tint film to put over the alarm clock display.

a good find
I really enjoy the touch face front and the blue back glow of the clock. I also like that the light is off unless the interface is touched. The alarm is great since it gives accelerating beeps instead of an annoying honk or a fuzzy radio. I also love that it gives the temp outside so I know how to dress in the morning for my run instead of running downstairs to check out the weather. It is a great find. The packaging was also very good and delivery was quick.

The (almost) perfect alarm clock
After having tried several "atomic time" clock radios and alarm clocks, I have finally found what is for me a nearly perfect unit.

The clock easily synchs up with the time signal from WWVB, even during the daytime, when many other units can't (assuming you orient the antenna properly).

The digitally tuned radio works well on both AM and FM, being one of the few radios that I have tried that doesn't get swamped by the nearby radio towers.

A big plus on the alarm clock feature is that you can set the alarm to a particular station and volume, and then go to sleep with the radio set for a different station and volume. So you can go to sleep with a classical station on a low volume and wake up to a news station on a very loud volume.

Even without the HiGlo turned on, the display is very high contrast and easy to read in even moderately dim light.

I happen to prefer that the HiGlo isn't on full-time, since I try to avoid light pollution in my bedroom at night (several medical studies have shown surprising health differences that seem to be related to the light levels during sleep!).

Some people have complained that the surface touch controls are too sensitive. I have not found that to be the case. The unit locks out the controls after one minute, so you have to touch a control twice in order activate it. As long as the clock is left on a table or dresser, this prevents accidental changes quite adequately. The only way this could be a problem was if someone was to pick up the clock and hold it in their hand such that they were bumping one of the controls.

Only three minor changes that prevent this from being perfect.

The first is that when set to wake to buzzer instead of radio, the clock only beeps for two minutes (albeit quite loudly in an increasingly annoying pattern) before giving up. Since I wake to radio, which plays for two hours, this isn't a problem for me.

Another feature that could use improvement would be a switch to toggle the HiGlo between its current behavior and being on full time (although this would throw off the accuracy of the inside temperature reading due to heat generation).

The only thing on the unit that I could call a real flaw is the lack of having a backup battery. The unit will hold its settings for several seconds during a brief outage, but if the outage lasts longer than that all settings (saved stations, alarm time) are lost. The clock will reset itself from WWVB once power is restored, but you will have to reprogram your favorite stations and reset your wake-up time.

Seriously Flawed Design
I got this clock as a Christmas gift, now I have to contact the giver to find out where to return this. I was excited at first, till I tested it.

There is one serious flaw that alone is enough not to buy. This clock does not save your settings in case of loss of power! That makes it useless as an alarm clock. I tested by disconnecting power for only 10 seconds. My timezone setting and alarm settings were erased. I confirmed with the company's tech support. So, if the power goes out for a few minutes at night during a snowstorm: The alarm won't go off. When I wake up the clock will be displaying Pacific time(not my time zone), and I will get to work rather late.

My old alarm clock didn't set itself, but I had the option of putting in a battery for backup so the alarm would still go off in the morning after a power outage. If a battery wasn't in, you wake up to the dreaded flashing 12:00 and know you have to get up and find your watch. With the BARM699A, it sets itself back to Pacific time and pretends nothing happened.

inexpensive table radio
If you're like me you've been looking at table radio's and wondering if there is such a thing anymore as a reasonably priced one. I happened upon this one for a good price and thought I'd give it a shot.

First I'll start this review on a positive note by saying the unit looks very nice. Although, the face is entirely made of plastic, it looks very much like an expensive piece of aluminum. The sound quality of this unit is not bad at all. In fact, when I first bought it I was listening in a noisy environment and thought, wow, I actually got a great deal! FM reception is pretty good and it does have an external wire antenna. The controls feel good and the tuning is geared down so that you can tune with precision feel. It's usefulness as a clock radio is questionable. The controls are on the back. However, it is nice as a "radio with a clock". The clock shows the time, month, day and day of the week.

Ugliness reared it's head the first time I turned this unit on in a quiet environment. It has a horrible hum that is very pronounced. This hum is at a constant level. The louder you make the music, the less you notice the hum. So, when listening in a quiet environment the hum is very bad.

Did I just happen to get a bad unit? Maybe. If you find that your unit doesn't have the hum problem please posts here as I wouldn't mind buying another one if I knew the hum wouldn't be a problem. I actually spent an evening taking mine apart, removing the built-in AC supply, and wiring it to an external "wall wart" type 12v dc power supply. Without the hum problem it's a nice unit.

You get what you pay for
This radio has a good sound for a small room like a bath room. However with all the technology they put into this radio, they put the worst volume & radio dial I've ever seen. It's loaded with sticky grease and breaks easy. If they would upgrade to better switches, this would be a nice radio. Ive had 2 of these units and both of them had faulty on/off volume knobs. The first one lasted for about a year before it broke while turning it off. The other was broken right of the box. There won't be a third. If you want something that will last, pay the extra money for a better brand of radio and save yourself the agravation.

Sentry radio
Problems as soon as I opened it. Clock did not light. Instructions said push reset button on back. There isn't one. Am /fm aux switch has to be coaxed on each selection to make proper contact. Mp3 player wouldn't work when attached to unit. This isn't a clock radio. It's a radio with a cheap digital clock and an alarm. No wake up music. Company is replacing whole unit.....without postage on my part. Expect, however, will eventually ask for refund. Don't buy this unit.

Excellent little radio...
This is a great little radio. It's got great volume levels that can be heard throughout the house without distortion. It's also very easy to set the time and alarms. It's small and compact so it's perfect for desks and whatnot. I definitely recommend!
